Tech Awareness & Cyber Security

Changes Coming to Campus Email:

Two changes are coming to campus email beginning in August 2019. These changes will affect UCSC Google accounts like the Google calendar, gmail and more. ITS is holding in-person supports session, for more information please visit here.

Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)

MFA is additional password protection that requires the use of a device (phone, tablet, token) when you log in. This device is required any time you access a UCSC application that uses the Gold password.

'Google to Gold' Campus emails are switching to Gold passwords

UCSC Google Applications are moving to the Gold password. This will affect anyone who accesses UCSC email (, calendar, and more. Below there are two categories with different timelines depending on if you currently have both a Gold and Blue account or if you only have a Blue account.

Emeriti will likely fall into the first category below since nearly all have both Gold and Blue accounts. Staff retirees that have a email account may fall into either category below:

1. Retirees who have both Gold and Blue passwords:

  • You can sign up for MFA anytime before August 26. The sooner, the better!
  • On August 26, UCSC email will be switching from Blue passwords to Gold passwords- this means to log in you will need your Gold password and have MFA.
  • After August 26 you will need to use MFA and your Gold password to log in.

2. Retirees who currently only have a Blue password:

  • First, contact ITS to confirm you don’t have a Gold account that is still active.
  • If you only have a Blue password, it will become your Gold password on August 20
  • This group has until Sept 10 to sign up for MFA. The sooner, the better!
  • After September 10 you will need to use MFA and your Gold password to log in.
